My dad owned the hardware shop at 9 The Square, Byrne & Kershaw between 1955 and 1962 and we lived above/behind the shop. I have very fond memories of The Square. I remember going to Sunday School at the church – I remember the building feeling cold! I popped to see The Square about 10 yrs ago and was disappointed I had to ask directions from Stratford Road because Radcliffe St is cut off now! Our old shop at that time was a tattoo parlour, sadly.
Lovely to see a photo of the old Church. My Grandfather, Fred Carpenter was the caretaker for a few years, and he and my Grandmother lived in the house next door.
What a shame that modernism has to ruin our past.
