Letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents, 24th June 1945
Photocopy of a letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents dated 24th June 1945. Hubert writes that he is pleased to hear his parents are having better weather and that they have been able to play some bowls. He is sorry that his father lost his game against Percy Sherwood, a crack player and tells his mother that she made his mouth water by telling him that they had lamb, green peas and new potatoes for dinner. Hubert is looking forward to going on leave to Lahore the next day and reports that they received their railway warrants, pay and 250 rupees the day before so “have plenty to go on leave with”. Hubert has only had 14 days leave in the past 18 months. Hubert reports that a new Signals officer has been reorganising everything and “turning the place upside down” so he has three times the work and “barely have time to pee”. However Hubert prefers to be busy. He doubts he will ever “get any stripes for promotion is slow” but does not worry about it although it does make him laugh to see some that have been promoted. He would like his friend Ray to be promoted though as he is the best wireless operator they have and has taught Hubert a lot. Hubert hopes Frank enjoyed his trip on the Royal Train and notes that Frank and Beryl will soon be thinking about a holiday. He has told Beryl that he bets she has already started packing as he remembers how she used to pack about a month before she went on holiday. Hubert is glad his daughter is better and is able to get out to play. His wife both his daughters now enjoy the swings so his wife “has some job” in pushing them both. Hubert reports that he and Ray went to the football final but the station team lost to the Army; the ground was in an awful state because of torrential rain. He was impressed by the size of the cup, almost three feet high. Hubert reports that the Indians enjoy football and get very excited. Hubert reports he is catching up with the local papers which were sent to him. He writes that he has had a letter from Gran and is very pleased to have received a letter from her. Hubert closes as he has another letter to write and must pack for his leave. He wishes his family well.
