Letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents dated 18th June 1945
Photocopy of a letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents dated 18th June 1945. Hubert thanks his parents for their letters of June 10th and 13th and is pleased to hear that they received so many from him in one week. He sympathises with the bad weather back at home and reports that his wife has said their daughter Bibs has to wear a scarf round her head when going out to protect her bad ear. Hubert tells his mother he does not require any more money and that she should keep it until he returns home. His mother has asked who they should vote for in the election but Hubert says he “is a bit in the dark” about the policies of the different parties but hopes the will receive some election material soon and will let his parents know his decision when he has seen some. Hubert says it is madness to have the election while so many are “scattered all over the world” and thinks a coalition government would have worked just as well in peacetime. He thanks his Gran and Aunt Bertha for sending some cigarettes although hasn’t yet received any others. Hubert is going on a months leave and tells his parents not to write for a month as mail is unlikely to be sent on. He hopes to go to Lahore where it will be “nice and cool”. Hubert reports that the cricket season has started the day before and he enjoyed himself , scoring eighteen runs and 55 runs with another fellow for the third wicket. He is glad his father has had his photograph taken with the victorious team and hopes it will be hanging in the pavilion. Hubert writes that Bernice had made him laugh when she said Bess the milk horse had won the Derby. He is sorry his farther did not back the winner but says he did not hear the broadcast. Hubert says he was unable to go to a good ENSA concert the night before as he was duty but the fellows had said it was very good. He closes by saying that his football team is in the final of the cup and wishes his family well.
