Photocopy of a letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents dated 1st May 1945. Hubert writes that he is pleased his parents had a lovely holiday and feel better. He congratulates his parents on winning the Brown Cup. He assures his mother that he has sufficient money for his needs and does not require any more, pointing out that he could not have sent them money for their birthdays if he had been short of funds. He asures his mother that he is not being “fleeced” in India and that people are fools if they pay the prices asked. The charges in the leave hostels etc are reasonable. He asks his mother not to worry about this as they are good enough to him already. He reports that he will be playing in a return football game that night and that the previous week he saw the film “Christmas Holiday” with Deanna Durbin. Hubert says that goods news is expected about the war as he has heard that Himmler has made another surrender offer and predicts the war will finish that week as the Germans have been beaten and know what it is like to fight on their own soil. He says that he has heard that the Soviet flag is flying from the Reichstag. He ends the letter by noting that Jack and Lil are going to the allotments for their holiday and suggests they go to Torquay instead. He wishes well to Beryl and Frank and notes that his wife has told him Bernice likes the swing at the recreation ground. He hopes the family has some beer for V day. There is a postscript to the letter thanking his mother for an address of a friends brother but the postcript ends saying that he has just heard that Hitler is dead “saving us a bullet”.
