Letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents, Beryl and Frank dated 2nd July 1945.
Photocopy of a letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents, Beryl and Frank dated 2nd July 1945. Hubert apologies that he has not written for a week but has been travelling before arriving at Lahore. He spent three days in Delhi which, he reports, is a nice place but very hot and “swarming with Yanks”. A lot of W.A.A.F.S are also stationed there. The shops are nice and it is possible to buy “almost anything” but the prices are “pretty high”. Hubert reports that he saw the Taj Mahal from the train at Agra. Hubert writes that it is hotter at Lahore than Delhi, a clammy heat far different from the dry heat he experiences at Secunderabad. He predicts he may be back in Secunderabad by the weekend if it does not get any cooler as he cannot do anything in the heat. That said, the club is nice with quite good food, facilities and accommodation. It has nice lounges, a reading room and 2 billiard tables. Hubert went to the cinema the previous evening and saw “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” which he enjoyed very much. Hubert reports that there were a lot of liberated Sikh soldiers on the train form Delhi who had been prisoners for 5 years. They were “decent fellows and very friendly” and wanted to know all about Hubert and his friends. Hubert writes that they gave an impressive welcome to an officer at Lahore station with a parading band and garlands were placed round the officer’s neck. Hubert was moved to see him meet his wife, mother and father. He reports that he is OK and hopes his family “are all in good fettle”. He hopes Frank and Beryl have a good holiday and have good weather. Hubert and Ray and going into Lahore to see what it is like. It has six cinemas so they “will be allright for pictures”. Hubert writes that he there is a good chance he will be demobbed soon and hopes to be home for Christmas. He wishes his family well.
