Tim was a Negotiation Surveyor in the Private Housing Unit at Milton Keynes Development Corporation and was responsible for individual self-build housing plots and so HomeWorld was seen as an opportunity for the Corporation to sell plots to people who would buy kit houses they had seen at HomeWorld. The Shopping Building had just opened and people were starting to take MK more seriously. It attracted worldwide interest. He remembers a lot of goodwill among the developers on-site as everybody was focused on being a part of an exciting exhibition.
The opening ceremony was interrupted by protestors complaining about housing problems in the rental sector in MK. The public loved HomeWorld, but without HomeWorld there wouldnt have been EnergyWorld; which led to improvements in energy standards nationwide. Tim feels HomeWorld has been a fascinating part of the MK story and our architectural history and is proud we still want to commemorate it 40 years later.
