Interview with David Crewe
David was Property Management Information Director at Milton Keynes Development Corporation and HomeWorld was Davids idea based on an ideal of providing a different range of houses on one site. This was on the eve of the Thatcher Government, and the paper to the Board was called `Here Comes Maggie. The aim of the paper was to encourage private sector housebuilding in MK which, until that point, had been predominately public sector.
The international launch was very popular with housebuilders who were curious about what the Corporation intended, and also because there had been quite a big drop off in house building at the time. Some overseas builders got involved with different styles and energy conscious buildings and materials. Two houses were built by developers from New Zealand. The public found the various houses fascinating and housebuilders found MK very attractive.
David was also in charge of the publicity to put Milton Keynes on the map. He instigated a series of very successful adverts for MK in the Sunday Times. Approximately 140,000 people attended HomeWorld. David feels the project was significant in the development of MK and ihe s particularly proud of HomeWorld.
