Liz Sparham's Interview Summary
Liz was born in 1955 and started volunteering at Willen around 10 years ago with the Friends of Willen Hospice. In the early days all the volunteers were trained by the Friends and in the 40 years that the Friends have been in existence they have raised 2.2 million pounds with events like horse racing, carnivals and auctions. As the Friends are no longer in existence, due to a lack of volunteers on the committee, Liz now volunteers in the shop at Grafton Gate helping with the organisation of the Christmas float, Midnight Moo and more recently at the Covid vaccination centres. Helping with the vaccination centres started at Bletchley and then later at the OU, mainly helping people with car parking, directions and wiping down chairs. The hospice was paid an hourly rate for each volunteer and around £63,000 was raised. Other fundraising includes the Easter Float and Christmas floats. Whilst working in the shop Liz sorts out the donations and anything of value is handed to the e-bay team. She also works as a bereavement counsellor which has had to be done by telephone sessions for both adults and children during Covid. She loves her work at Willen and gets an amazing feeling of well-being for the help she is able to offer.
