Milton Keynes Footpaths-Cycleways: Redway
Milton Keynes Footpaths-Cycleways: Redway
“In many of our larger cities today the car has become the biggest hazard to the pedestrian and cyclist. Public opinion and pressure groups are gradually persuading local authorities to make our towns safer for those who choose to travel on foot or by bicycle. So far, however, the progress in most cities is slow and piecemeal. In Milton Keynes, Britain’s newest city, the opportunity has been seized to show for the first time on a citywide scale how travel for pedestrians and cyclists in built up areas can be made safe and pleasant. This exciting solution is called Redway, an extensive network of footpaths/cycleways threaded throughout the city. Redway is unique in many ways. Most important is its complete separation from the city’s main roads and consequent high level of user safety. Redway is growing as Milton Keynes grows and already it is the largest network of footpaths/cycleways anywhere in Britain. Milton Keynes’ residents can begin now to enjoy a freedom of movement not known in any major UK town or city for more than 30 years.”
The leaflet then has the following sub-headings; the case for Redway, Redway combines footpaths with cyclists, it is easy to find and use, what redway means to Milton Keynes, the case for the bicycle and more information.
There is a diagram under ‘It is easy to find and use’ of the yellow bollards which mark entrance/exit onto redways.
There is also a map showing how redways go under roads and centrally through housing areas.
On the back there is a map of the whole redway circuit across Milton Keynes.
