  • Yes remember it well. Not sure what was put there was much better
At that time the motor car was king and communities had to be changed to accomodate them. The council had men of little imagination and foresight and today the internal combustion engine should give way to communities so preserving more of our heritage
I distinctly remember that during the demolition Civil Defence conducted some exercises in the houses. They brought in people covered in fake blood and tattered clothes so they could attend to them as first aid and evacuate them – this was the height of the cold war and we were terrified of nuclear attack and it’s aftermath

  • I remember the buildings on Cannon Corner and down St John Street being demolished in the late ’50s and then the replacements and new Library being built.

The ’60s building on the corner has been demolished and rebuilt again in recent years.

Prior to the new Library we used to go to Brooklands, currently the British Legion Club, near the north bridges to chose our library books – it was a lovely building inside at that time.
