St George's Church parish magazine, 1939

This Church magazine is at first sight a fairly substantial document, but most of the inner pages are filled with news provided by the Anglican Church separately. It was kept by two of the people whose marriage on October 28th 1939 is announced inside – Frank Harry Brown and Beryl Louise Taylor.

There is other topical news too. The Second World War had broken out in September and the magazine extends a welcome to schools from London whose teachers and pupils have been evacuated to the town – Tollington Preparatory School and Tollington High School for Girls and Acton Technical College for Boys.

There is also fascination in seeing the adverts for local shops and small businesses, showing the wide range of opportunities that the town was offered at this time. Two that catch the eye are Miss Lucy Chester L.R.A.M, M.R.S.T, who offered Pianoforte and Singing Lessons and was recommended by Max Pirani, Philip Levi and Irene Thompson – all Professors of the Royal Academy of Music. The other advert is for Miss E.J. Bennett, a Spirella Corsetiere who would demonstrate in Clients’ own homes ‘by appointment’.

  • Re. Lucy Chester. Taught by this great lady – next to chip shop on Stratford Road. Now a music professional myself. Her married name was Read – her husband ran a hairdressers on the square, under Masonic Hall. Still teaching piano in early 1980s.
