Object No.77

Mortgage from Square property, 1886

Object No.77

This mortgage of £200 is between Mr William Tubbs and the trustees of Court Unity No. 3663 of the Ancient Order of Foresters London United District Friendly Society.

William Tubbs is described as a coachmaker of Buckingham Street. The money was used to purchase 7 Market Square, Wolverton. Originally the west side of the Square was referred to as Market Square, whereas the east side was Morland Terrace (but sometimes numbered as a continuation of Radcliffe Street). Some properties have had as many as three different numbers because of this. Robert Stokes was the previous occupier.

The mortgage was redeemed on the 28th March 1905. Wolverton was considered unusual because so many working class people owned their own houses. This was assisted by the availability of mortgages and what were considered good wages at the Railway Works. Most mortgages were with the Wolverton (Bucks) Permanent Benefit Society(set up by men who worked inside the Works) which had a symbol of a railway carriage as their insignia (this was embossed on the mortgage documents).
