Prayer mat, 2003

Object No.58
Object No.58

This prayer mat was a gift to Ahamad from his grandparents when they came back from the Haj -the pilgrimage that Muslims make to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

It is the duty, asked by Allah, for every Muslim to perform the Haj at least once in their lifetime as a demonstration of faith.

The scene illustrated on the prayer mat is the Holy Kaba -a black cube made of granite from the hills near Mecca . It is approximately 13.1m (43ft) high and is the most sacred site in Islam.

A devout Muslim prays 5 times a day, kneeling on their prayer mat and facing east towards Mecca .
