Milton Keynes: What's in a name?
Milton Keynes: What's in a name?
“Many people have influenced life in north Buckinghamshire: Ancient Britons, Romans, Saxons, Danes, Normans and even French lacemakers all left their mark. Aristocrats and artisans, entrepreneurs and farmers played their parts in the creation of the landscape and settlements which existed here until the early 1970s. The importance of continuity and historic roots was recognised when the development of Milton Keynes began. Many of these roots can be found in the names now used in the city. This short leaflet offers a dip into the vast pool of sources used for naming in Milton Keynes. Area of Street names are shown in italics.”
This leaflet celebrated the achievement of Milton Keynes on its 25th anniversary in 1992.
It gives information on the Romans, the land, the Britons and Saxons, the Manor, the Normans, field names, old tracks, parish history, the Civil War, the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, central Milton Keynes and other themes.
