Interview with Annie and Brad Bradstock (b.1953 and 1950).
Annie and Brad Bradstock came to Stony Stratford in 1974 to stay with a friend; they liked it so much that they decided to move there and found an old house in Stony. They recall there was plenty to do: the cricket club, the pub, and Brad joined the Hemlock Band (later the Cock and Bull Band); they settled in well. They talk of local amenities: cinemas, shopping locally and in Northampton, Bletchley Leisure Centre, and the lack of a hospital. They talk of public transport problems today, housing estates, the City Centre (‘It’s very cosmopolitan’), the Church and Willen Pagoda, and their family’s use of the Redways: ‘when the children were little we used to go out on our bikes and pedal for miles.’
Since 1994 they have lived in Spencer Street and they talk of the benefits of this cooperative community, particularly for their lifestyle of music and theatre. They describe the activities they have enjoyed and the networks they have built up in the community. Brad says: ‘I’m perfectly happy living in Milton Keynes. I think it’s a great place… There is… inner-city deprivation in some places. … that’s all part of a modern city I guess.’
