Interview with Maria Dyke (b.1953).
Maria Dyke was born in Turin, Italy and first came to the UK 1973 for a few years as an au pair and in other jobs; she married in Italy in 1979 and returned to the UK, moving to Neath Hill, Milton Keynes in 1980. She describes her first impressions of MK, and comments on her initial isolation; she considered that Neath Hill needed some regular community events.
She describes her various jobs; currently she is a Learning Support Assistant and teaches Italian for Adult Education. She chose not to join the local Italian community, but talks of the cultural aspects of Italian life that she has retained and passed on to her children; they spoke only Italian when young. Asked whether she has settled in MK she says: ‘I don’t think I’ll ever go back to Italy … but I would still call Turin my home’.
