Interview with Wesley Brown (b.1933).
Wesley Brown was born in Jamaica. In the 1970s he moved to Milton Keynes from Crewe, to a house in Fullers Slade, later moving to Netherfield and finally Great Linford. He describes his wife and children’s reaction to the move; he was lonely initially, until he began to make friends through neighbours, playing cricket, and going to the pub. He talks about the development of the community in Netherfield. He comments that he has encountered some racial prejudice in MK.
Since moving to MK he has had several jobs but has now retired because of ill-health; there was plenty of work in MK at first, for both skilled and unskilled workers, pay was better than in Crewe. Public transport was poor. In his opinion the healthcare in the early days was alright; he needed regular treatment for his asthma. His leisure activities revolved round sport; he doesn’t really use any MK entertainment facilities. In his opinion the development of MK is a change for the better. He says: ‘MK is home, because I’m living here … well, I’ll never forget where I come from. I’ll always remember Jamaica.’
