Old lady and gentleman sculpture, 2007

Object No.98
Object No.98

This sculpture was created by ‘A’ level Art Students from Radcliffe School working with community artists Bill Billings and Paul Smith.

The idea for the piece came from Secret Garden designer Neil Higson who liked the idea of placing a couple, watching their old TV, on the site of the living room of one of the demolished villas that used to be on the site of the Secret Garden.

Bill Billings was an expert in creating concrete sculptures – his most famous is the Dinosaur at Peartree Bridge – and on this project he passed on that skill to Paul Smith. Bill was meant to just act as consultant to the project, but typical of him and his enthusiasm, he got fully involved, even though his health was poor. This was his last piece of work before he died of a heart attack on 26th December 2007.
