'The Proofmaster' press, 1960s
McCorquodale’s opened in 1878 to provide jobs for daughters of men employed in the Railway Works. It started with 20 employees aged 13-21 working 54 hours per week. The company’s early work was printing registered envelopes for the General Post Office, and Bradshaw’s Guide to railway timetables. By 1886 it employed 120 women and 20 men and this rose to 900 people in its heyday. The press was manufactured in by Soldan’s of London.
