Interview with Marilyn Price (b.1936).
Marilyn Price first heard about Milton Keynes in 1972/3. She describes their reasons for wanting to leave London, and their choice of a house on Fullers Slade. She recalls their families had mixed feelings about the move, but she thought ‘it would have a better environment’ for her daughter. She comments that the Fullers Slade houses were ‘not as bad as they were made out to be’. They had good neighbours and had no problems with noise; she enjoyed making a garden. She found it easy to make friends. However, they later bought a house in Wolverton; she then found it more difficult to settle because of some resentment of incomers. But by joining organisations and finding temporary work at the Health Centre, she made some good friends and now feels settled. She comments on some of the social problems they see at the Health Centre.
In her opinion there has been some ‘Americanization’ of MK, such as MacDonalds, the Point, and there are some estates she dislikes. But visiting friends all enjoy the shopping centre. Overall she comments: ‘I think MK is very good … ‘I get very cross when people run it down like they do, I think it’s got a lot to offer.’ She mentions MK United Football Club, for whom her son plays. She says: ‘I’ve no longer got any hankering to go back to London or Colchester….I think possibly we’ll be here now perhaps until my husband retires.’
