Edna Read talking about her life and her links to Milton Keynes
A Hemson Associates film about Edna Read talking about her life and her links to Milton Keynes in 2007.
At the beginning of the film the words ‘After Pompeii’ come up on the screen followed by ‘After Hiroshima’ with the sound of a gong. The word ‘After’ then appears in dusty, gravelly ground. The location changes to Edna’s sculptures outside and Edna recites a poem and music is played in the background. This section of the film ends with the view of ‘After’ in the ground now on fire.
The rest of the film are pieces to camera by Edna with the film of her interview interspersed with still images and film footage including art work and locations such as Campbell Park. The film is split into sections.
00:02:00 – Who am I. Edna talks about when she made the pieces of sculpture and what inspired her and how her background affected her.
00:02:57 – Early Days. Edna talks about Art School and how she had to do painting even though she would rather have done sculpture.
00:04:01 – Milton Keynes City Gallery. She talks about working for her husband before coming to Milton Keynes and setting up touring exhibitions around the new city she called ‘The City Gallery’. She talks about being invited to Venice to attend the exhibition ‘Thinking Big: New Concepts in British Culture’ in 2002 and touring people around Milton Keynes showing them the art work.
00:06:59 – Campbell Park, Milton Keynes. Edna talks about Campbell Park and how it was designed for sculpture. The film shows art work in the park.
00:08:33 – New Opportunities. Edna talks about being asked to be a part of the Open University Art Walk and having her first exhibition. She finishes by talking about how excited she is by the future and her ideas for new artwork.
00:10:29 – the film ends with quotes on the screen from the Vice Chancellor of The Open University and Anne Collins from Australia praising Edna’s first exhibition.
