"Journeys" an International Artists Symposium
A 30 minute film on the second Milton Keynes International Artists Symposium. The film is narrated by Allan Davies and was filmed by John Hemson Associates. This was a two week symposium on the theme “Journeys” which started on the 5 July 2002. It was held at Westbury Farm and was hosted by the Silbury Group.
The film is split into sections:
00:00:00 The film starts with scenes of the Great Linford Art Centre, the Grand Union canal, trees, and artists at work to the accompaniment of bagpipe music with an introduction. This is followed by shots of the artists socializing at the Barrel Building in the Open University. Anita Rost, the organizer, opens the event and the narrator introduces all the artists taking part with shots of them at work or at the party. The guests leave the centre and take various forms of transport, including vintage cars and motorbikes, to go to the symposium at Westbury Farm. This is followed by a party with a BBQ and music from a folk group.
00:04:43 The next section is on the Community Workshops where the artists taught each other the techniques they use. It includes Lino Printing; Chinese brush painting; Digital Imaging and Book Design; and Acrylic Painting. The workshops include one for children ‘Taking a line for a walk’ where they go for a walk in the woods and draw.
00:09:33 This section of the film covers a day off when the delegates go on an ‘Exploration of the Grand Union Canal’. It shows views of the canal and of the artists on their canal boats. They stop for a picnic on the bank of the canal.

00:12:38 A gathering of the artists at Paul and Shirley Millichip’s house. Paul is a member of the Silbury Group
00:13:35 This is followed by short presentations of their work by the artists. Including Helen Taylor, Silbury group, who has invited the delegates to her studio; Elizabeth Krotoff; Anatas Ulkaskas; Fabien Ouatarde and Anthony Hayes show their work at Art Works in Great Linford.
00:17:45 The artists go to the Royal Lino Chinese restaurant in central Milton Keynes for a meal. This section includes shots of Professor Liu demonstrating how to use chopsticks. This is followed by shots of some of the artists the next morning in their rooms.
00:19:27 The film shows the artists creating their pieces for the final exhibition. Including Fabian Ouatarde; Antanas Ulkaskas; Elizabeth Krotoff; Professor Liu; Janusz Debis; Saulius Paliukas; Anthony Hayes; and Valerie Gleeson. It is followed by shots of the preparation of the gallery space by the volunteers and the hanging of their work by the artists.
00:24:02 The exhibition is formally opened by Arvydas Zalpys artist and director of Kournus gallery Lithuania followed by a speech by Valerie Gleeson. The film then shows shots of the opening event and the artwork by the artists including Janusz Debis; Sally Annett; Liu Dawei; Valerie Gleeson; Elizabeth Krotoff; Anthony Hayes; Saulius Paliukas. It includes music from John-Pierre Rasle. The film concludes with the thoughts of the different artists in their own languages.
