The Scout Hut in 1939

The original Scout Troop, in 1908, met in the outhouse at the rear of 53 Stratford Road , but as scouting grew in the town so did the need for their own premises. Negotiating for the purchase of the land for the current Scout Hall on the corner of Cambridge St and Furze Way began in 1937 and the building began in Easter 1939 and it was going to be opened in September 1939, but the Second World War intervened and it finally opened in 1947.

This signed programme is rather special. It belonged to Fred Coxhill who was Assistant Scoutmaster at the time and went on to become Group Scoutmaster for many years. Amongst the signatories are 3 of the original 1908 patrol – W. Eady, J Scragg and E Causer.
