Copy of a letter from Albert French to his sister May on 23.01.1916
The letter is headed ’23 January’ and ‘Stationed at Witley Camp, Godalming, Surrey’. Albert tells May that he has received the chocolate, handkerchief and letter, although the parcel was addressed Hants instead of Surrey. He is quite well having lost his cold. His throat and chest are alright now. He talks about trying to find the guardroom to give in their passes. He enjoyed a week’s furlough, especially with Violet on Saturday and Sunday. It was nice to come home and rotten coming back to the army. But he is going to stick at it and make a man of himself. He tells May he took a liking to Violet and hopes she will write to him. His mate didn’t think much of his photo, saying he looked about 14 years old and not much like a soldier. Albert comments that he is still training to be one. He received a letter from Will and comments on George having medicine now. He thanks May for the chocolate and has it for dessert after dinner. He doesn’t think it will make him sick. He then talks about an incident where he nearly got knocked over by a motor lorry. They were on a night march without lanterns and had to scatter out of the way of the lorry. They were lucky to all escape unharmed. They are doing lots of marching and skirmishing now. He tells May to keep ‘jogging along’ and sends his love.
