Copy of a letter from Albert French to his father in 1916
Albert talks about the trenches and says that he doesnÕt mind the snipers and the shells. He says it is dull but if you keep cheery it’s alright. He says there is not much fighting but hopes all the fresh troops will make something happen. He talks about the extreme weather, sleeping during the day and working at night. He is busy but wants lots of scraps with the Germans as it is rotten being in the trenches without firing on them. There is not a lot to do when out of the trenches. Men at home would not like it as there are no theatres to go to. He talks about the way aeroplanes are shot down. He talks about Aunt’s parcel. He hopes to be home soon and that the war will be finished. He talks about sending money to the front, and thanks his father for the offer of some, but he has enough for the moment. He sends his love.
