Gala First Night of Milton Keynes Theatre
The film starts part way through a speech by the conductor of Milton Keynes Orchestra. He says that the conductor will not be setting a tradition of playing encores, but as the gala was a unique event the orchestra will play the final movement of Stavinsky’s Firebird. The orchestra begins to play this piece but the film is cut after a few bars.
The film then moves to the foyer of the theatre where in a succession of interviews, a female interviewer asks concert goers what they thought of the concert and the theatre. Responses are consistently positive. The camera moves around the audience. Many of the concert goers are in evening dress and having refreshments.
00:12:03 the film moves to an event in Theatre Square. There is a fairly sizeable crowd and the event is attended by the Horizon Radio and BBC Three Counties. A brass band is playing. We see people going in and out of the gallery. There are performers outside the Theatre from the wacky circus including children giving a gymnastic display, a boy on stilts with a diablo and clowns. We see the Mayor talking to an elderly lady in a wheelchair. People are filmed going in and out of the main door of the Theatre and moving about the foyer. Outside the theatre children are having their faces painted.
00:27:58 the film then moves inside MK Gallery where people are looking at the Gilbert and George exhibition ‘The Rudimentary Pictures’.
