Copy of a letter from Albert French to his sister May, dated 13.11.1915
Letter is headed ‘Stationed at Gidea Park, Essex, 1915, November 13’. Albert writes to May asking after the health of the family and stating that he received her parcel and is very grateful for the chocolate that was in it. He shared it with the other men but ate the lions share himself. He complains about the wet weather but says he has never been healthier. The regiment is still getting 20 recruits a day but thinks more are needed or conscription will come. His Captain thinks the war will be hard and long and that it will be won by sheer weight of numbers, as does Albert. Even if they had 10 million men they could not break through as the German positions are impregnable, same as the British. He thinks the battalion might be sent to Serbia. He says lots of men are being promoted but he will wait a little longer for his lance corporal stripe as he thinks there will be jealous remarks about his age. He has plenty of time and when he starts he will keep rolling. He gives his love to all the family.
