38: IT’S IN THE SQUARE PROCESSION 2010
WOF/041
It’s in the Square was a successful 2 day music event that took place on an annual basis in the Square in Wolverton. Latterly it also included a carnival-type procession around the streets of the town. In 2010 the theme of the procession was the World Cup, which took place that year in South Africa.
Bringing Ilkla Mooer To North Bucks (1 June 1973)
TRM/022
A Cockney is born to the sound of Bow’s bells. I was born to the sound of Ilkla Moor baht ‘at. And if you ever try to sing that please sing Ilkla Mooer not Ilkley More. You will be less of an outsider. How the tune of Ilkla Moor ever became invested with those verses I ...
37: HARRY READ TALKING
WOF/038
Harry Read was a retired foreman of the Smithy in Wolverton Railway Works. He lived in Victoria Street. In 1978 he was interviewed by Paul Atkinson of the Open University for their Research Methods course. This is an extract from that interview. Flora And Fauna And Memories Of Percy King (25 May 1973)
TRM/021
The recent story about the efforts to transform a gravel pit on the Wolverton-Newport Pagnell road into a wild life sanctuary made interesting reading for me. So do the new fortnightly nature notes in the Gazette. They remind me of the time, over 20 years ago, when every couple of months or so I had a ...

36: WOLVERTON & THE ROYAL TRAIN
WOF/037
It’s a testament to the reputation for craftsmanship that Wolverton Railway Works had that it is the place where many of the Royal Trains were built, and the current one is still stored today. Generations of Wolverton workers served on successive royal trains and also helped to build them and this film tells their story. The ...
A Refreshing Change Came From The Back Of Beyond (18 May 1973)
TRM/020
Regard with a touch of sadness the coming demise of the local district councils. I have known them since I came here at the end of the war, but how to begin writing about them is a problem. They are such a big subject and especially so in the case of the Bletchley Urban Council, ...
35: NOBBY’S LAST RUN
WOF/036
September 5th 1964 saw the closure of the Nobby Newport train line as a result of the Beeching Plan. It had run between Newport Pagnell and Wolverton since 1867. We are lucky that back in the 60s, 70s and 80s Alan Herring had an 8mm cine camera and recorded significant local events. But the films were ...
The Gazette's Farewell Tribute To A Retiring Colleague (11 May 1973)
TRM/019
It’s easier to say hello to a new colleague that farewell to an old friend. And when that happens to be a respected colleague at the end of his journalistic career, it’s a task that’s well nigh impossible. Our attempt to do so is certain to come as a surprise to the man in question – H.S. ...
