St John Ambulance First Aid Shield, 1935

Object No.87
Object No.87

This shield was competed for by volunteer ambulance men who worked for the London Midland and Scottish ( LMS ) Railways in the Southern Midlands area. The Railway Company divided up the vast area of the country they covered into districts and divisions and Wolverton was in District 2, Division 2 along with places like Wellingborough, Stratford-on-Avon, Northampton , Bletchley, Sandy , Luton and Bedford . The shield was last awarded in 1990. In the competitions the teams were presented with a scenario (a broken leg, bad cuts etc) and they had to diagnose and treat it, against the clock. Today casualties have special make-up, but in those days the doctor at the competition would describe the symptoms to each team.
