Peter Waterman, MKDC Social Development Director 1987-1988
Peter was born in Tunbridge Wells, then the family moved to Medway Towns. At the time of Dunkirk the children were evacuated to South Wales for 2 years, so his young life was full of interesting periods of change and adjustment to new people. In Medway Towns, he attended Rochester Grammar School, then did two ears National Service, which he describes as a ‘very good experience, living with a variety of people. He, then studied Theology at Oxford and chose to be ordained, attending theological college in Cambridge. Appointed curate in Hatfield, he worked for nine years on the new town development. He talks of his achievements there, in youth work and ecumenical relationships. His work on a study of the housing needs of second generation residents in new towns had brought him to the attention of the Bishop of Oxford and in 1967 he was offered the job of Bishop of Oxford’s Planning Officer for Milton Keynes.
