Extracts from the Northampton Mercury considering the consequences of changes to Poor Laws, thereby removing the labourer’s ‘motives for exertion’. Starting a family would ensure a Parish allowance, ‘most improvident marriages were the consequence of this most pernicious and most demoralising system’. Extracts from an ‘examination’ of the changes in the personal conditions and expectations of labourers carried out by Mr. Whateley and Mr. Chadwick. A marked improvement was noted in their clothing, food and housing (1834).
