Transcript of a report from the Hertford Mercury dated Saturday 29th April(1848). The report recounts a ‘shocking a fatal accident’ that took place at Rabley Bottom near Welwyn. Six workmen constructing the viaduct were working about forty feet in the air when one of the ropes holding the scaffolding gave way. Mr. John Cummings was killed and several others were seriously injured. The inquest returned a verdict of accidental death.
