Week 6: TOPPING OUT WOLVERTON STATION
In 1991 Network Rail announced that they were refurbishing Wolverton station, that had stood on the bridge on the Stratford Road for more than 100 years. Unfortunately, while residents thought ‘refurbishing’ meant that the station was going to be updated, in fact it was demolished. Network Rail’s plans for a replacement were rejected by the MK Council as not being a fitting replacement and it was 10 years before a suitable building was erected to replace it after lots of local lobbying. On 7th February 2012 the traditional ‘topping out’ ceremony was held, prior to the station being completed and opened to the public.
This is Wolverton’s 4th station. For a history of the others there is a large display panel in the new station’s entrance hall and also a website https://www.wolvertonstations.co.uk
