The Way Ahead was a groundbreaking collaborative fine art project which was devised to be newsworthy at a timely moment for equality law – 2004.
Disabled artist Caroline Cardus supported disabled people to speak out about their everyday experiences of access and integration. Using the familiar format of the UK’s road signs, “The Way Ahead” presents these views, in an accessible, subversive, and humorous way.
The project took place during 2004, and the exhibition premiered on 1-3 October 2004 in Midsummer Place, Milton Keynes at the same time as The Disability Discrimination Acts’ final rights of access came into force.
Since then The Way Ahead has been continually in demand as a Disability Art protest piece, with exhibitions around the UK including Trafalgar Square in September 2005.
