The Gigante project was initiated by Inter-Action MK in March 1995. Gigantes are traditional Catalonian processional figures – usually 12 feet high, and used for a wide variety of community festivals and fiestas. The project took place on 6 estates local to Inter-Action. Schools and community groups took part in the building of 7 Gigante. People of all ages and abilities were involved in learning how to make and costume a giant. The construction work with schools and local estates took place from August to December 1995. Each Gigante took a week to build with the two MK artists in residence (Linda Cairnes and Allan Davies) and Inter-Action’s Community Arts Development Worker (Chris Draude). A Gigante procession took place on December 2nd at Inter-Action’s Tree Dressing Celebratory event. There are a further 74 pictures in the main Living Archive – these 9 photographs are just a sample!
