Barbara Green identifies as a lesbian and was born in Nottinghamshire. Dani Brumm identifies as a lesbian and was originally from Switzerland. This joint interview captures their personal and political journeys as lesbian activists in Milton Keynes and beyond. Dani and Barbara met through mutual friends in a Swiss lesbian community and later moved in together in the UK. They reflect on their early activism, including involvement in Switchboard, campaigning against Section 28, and efforts to foster as an openly lesbian couple, a groundbreaking move at the time. Their fostering experience, while rewarding, was also emotionally and politically challenging, involving navigating institutional biases and societal scrutiny. They discuss the evolution of LGBTQ+ rights, the importance of community, and the need for continued activism in the face of rising right-wing politics. Both express pride in today’s more inclusive LGBTQ+ landscape while urging younger generations to remain vigilant and active in protecting hard-won rights.
