Roger was born in Southampton post-war. Following a talk in the sixth form about a dwarfish race in Las Hardes, Spain, Roger and some friends were successful in gaining a Ford travelling scholarship to spend six weeks in Las Hardes and wrote a report about both the geographical and sociological aspects. Following advice from Morris Brody, lecturer at Southampton University, Roger then decided to study social anthropology at Sussex University, where the topics best matched his interests. After graduation he took a diploma in community development and then temporarily took over some lecturing jobs in Sussex. Friends Roger and Monica Else (who were working in Milton Keynes Development Corporation’s Social Development department) suggested that a post as a community worker in MK would suit Roger, so he applied.
