Neil Higson
In this report, Neil first comments on the views expressed by visitors to Milton Keynes, five years after the publication of the Master Plan, about the monotony of landscape interest and the ‘disjointed’ feeling promoted by the range of building styles in the city at this stage. Although this is partly attributable to the early stage of city development, Neil considers that it may point to weaknesses in the initial Landscape policy, which is crucial to the development of a good living environment.
He believes that the problem may have been caused by lack of sufficient consideration of landscape policy within the three areas of Housing, Grid Roads and Linear Parks, which have each been considered in isolation. He therefore considers means of integrating policies which affect all of these aspects. He concludes by recommending the preparation of A New Landscape Structure Plan and a Linear Parks Supplementary Study.
