I have great memories as a boarder at York House late 1940s to early 1950s (1952). My Mother (Joan Bell) worked there for a while in the late 1940s. I do find myself visiting when travelling close by. Much has changed especially the foyer and stairway. Also the large tree in the middle of the drive has gone.
I recall a Miss Hatton and of course the Olgivies. it is likeley thet Miss Hatton taught me to tie my shoe laces in the kitchen.
Following Rosalie’s interesting comments I am very interested in finding out more about the history of York House School and the relatives of pupils who may have attended. My mother, then Elizabeth (Betty) Hatton, left St.Mary’s School in Whaddon in 1935, and went to work at York House school. I’m not sure exactly what her role was but she helped to look after the children, cooked, cleaned, maybe even helped with their homework. She was there from 1935 and was certainly there still in 1941 as I have an autograph book signed by many staff and pupils from that period. I know that she used to fetch paraffin from the garage next door, as my father, Tom Bushell used to work there as a motor fitter. Mum and dad married in August 1951, and moved to Leckhamstead. I would be happy to share information and the odd couple of photos and scans of the signatures from mum’s autograph book with anyone who’s interested. Regards Graham Bushell.
