'All Change' Act 2 Scene 6 - Rivalry between Wolverton and Crewe.
ACT TWO
Scene 6 : Rivalry between Wolverton and Crewe.
McConnell came into conflict with a new breed of railway entrepreneur. Richard Moon represented something of a new philosophy in the industrial development of nineteenth-century England. His loyalty was to the shareholders and their demand for quick returns on an investment. McConnell’s ‘Bloomer’ locomotive, although cheap to run, long lasting and efficient, was expensive to build.
The anecdote about Chandos being refused a job on the line was widespread, including the version in J. P. Neele’s “Railway Reminiscences’.’
The American Civil War news bulletins were based on contemporary reports for the Times Newspaper.
The rest of the scene is created from Moon’s and McConnell’s letters which are kept in the British Transport Record Office.
(Descriptions adapted from the script notes in ‘All Change’ booklet – 1977).
