'All Change' Act 1 Scene 2 - Poor Man at the Gate.
Scene 2 : Poor Man at the Gate.
Mechanisation during the agricultural revolution and the effects of the Poor Law led to an acute deterioration in the condition of the labouring class. Discontent took the form of acts of violence and riots which spread over the country and this so-called Captain Swing rebellion had many local manifestations cited in newspapers and official reports.
The labourer’s letters came from Hobsbawn and Rude – “Captain Swing.”
The Duke’s advice to the farmers is a citation of the law as it stood with regard to Captain Swing offences.
Many details of the labourers’ conditions came from Gibbs – “Records of Buckinghamshire.”
(Description adapted from the script notes in ‘All Change’ booklet – 1977).
