'All Change' Act 2 Scene 1 - Queen Victoria visits Wolverton.
ACT TWO
Scene 1 : Queen Victoria visits Wolverton.
The main source for this scene was material in ‘Stokers and Pokers’, written from personal observation in 1850, at about the time of Queen Victoria’s visit to Wolverton. The account contains a detailed description of the town, the railway locomotive works, the allotments, the library and the schools.
The newspapers of the time carried enthusiastic accounts of the Queen’s reception by the local people, including entertainments provided by children. The younger members of the community drama group were given their chance.
Linking with the Hal-an-Tow image of summer coming in and winter retreating, in the infants’ masque, a snowman is melted by a big sun and little flower-children dance in the place where he had stood.
(Descriptions adapted from the script notes in ‘All Change’ booklet – 1977).
