MK50 The People’s Story: our new project

MK50 The People’s Story: our new project

We’re celebrating after being awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to undertake a project entitled ‘MK50 The People’s Story’. This new project will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Milton Keynes by capturing the stories of the people who live here.

We’ll be digitising historic film and video footage, interviewing key people involved in the planning and early development of Milton Keynes, and creating 50 digital film stories from individuals recalling special events, places or objects that have been significant over the last 50 years. We’ll hold series of 4 public screenings of the digitised film and video material to stimulate memories.

From our research we will create a full length documentary film, a large-scale multi-media exhibition, a book, a website and education resources.

Contributing to a new gallery at MK Museum

We’ll also be working closely with Milton Keynes Museum to contribute directly to the content of the new Modern MK Gallery at the Museum.  Extracts from the digital stories will be presented either by projection or using digital media techniques. This will tell the People’s Story which will run throughout the Modern MK Gallery exhibitions, telling stories of those key people that made it happen but also of the waves of people that have come since – the pioneers who came in the 1970s but also the people who have come from all over the world to live here.

  • The photo of the children from MK village around the sign at the entrance to the village at the top of this news item – I hope someone is identifying each of them and contacting them for their memories of the day this iconic photo was taken.

Those children have grown up and matured along with MK and should be an integral part of the MK50 story.
