George Smart recalls his childhood in Islington living in an extended family. Talks about when the Second World War broke out and air raid shelters were built. He talks about his evacuation to the countryside and his mother joining him, their return to London after the bombing and the beginnings of Doodlebugs. Recalls his two years National Service in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and serving in Suez. Moved to Suffolk after the war but no job opportunities for family. Moved to Houghton Regis but area declined so moved on to Milton Keynes.
