Interview about childhood memories of the railway in Bletchley, and the Honeymoon Special.
Pauline Redhead recalls taking tea to her uncle, an engine driver, in a billy can; he heated up his food by putting it on a shovel and heating it up on the coals. She talks of the railway just being part of life; they used the train to go to Northampton and Bedford; as a child, these were always steam trains. She recalls going with friends to the Sixty Steps (which still exist, near the new Stadium), to watch trains and collect the numbers. They played by the lines and ran across them. She remembers seeing the Royal Train: ‘all shiny and lovely and we thought it was wonderful.’ Her most memorable train journey was when she and her husband got married and went on holiday to Blackpool by train; they had free passes because her husband worked at Wolverton Works, and discovered they were travelling on the ‘Honeymoon Special’.
