Interview about working in railway parcels offices.
Eric Hickford talks about Willesden Junction parcels office, where he first worked, describing the role of the parcels clerk. He remembers specific incidents, and can still recall the charge rates for different distances, proud of his quickness with figures. The parcels office moved to Wembley and later to Harrow and Wealdstone, where he was promoted to chief clerk and enjoyed virtually running his own business. He says with pride: ‘We honestly delivered more parcels per driver than anywhere in Great Britain.’ Once the railways stopped running parcels delivery, the drivers formed National Carriers Ltd. Talking of his staff and problems he encountered, he comments that he has thoroughly enjoyed his career and the people he met.
