Interview with Susanne Shaw (b.1948).
Susanne Shaw moved to Olney in 1974 when her husband obtained a post at the Open University. She initially applied for a job as a secretary at the Milton Keynes Development Corporation but a conversation with Lena Galloway, Personal Assistant to John Platt, led to an offer of an interview in the Information and Press Unit instead. Here she was involved with the marketing of Milton Keynes, including helping to organise exhibitions around London and the rest of the country to promote Milton Keynes. Susanne considers the opening of the Shopping Centre to be significant to the development of Milton Keynes because it brought people to the area to shop rather than bringing them to relocate or for commercial reasons. She recalls the opening of the Shopping Centre in 1979 and mentions the Queen’s visit to the Shopping centre and Fishermead. In her recollection of her time at the MKDC she mentions Fred Roche, Derek Walker, Alan Duffy and Bob Hill. In her opinion the building of Milton Keynes was a success and she now considers it to be her home.
