Interview with Mowled Jama.
Mowled Jama came to England (Sheffield) from Somalia in 1988 as a child with his family. He talks of his father’s decision to leave Somalia because of the civil war. In 1997 he chose to move to Milton Keynes, to work and study part-time at Luton University. He describes his problems with obtaining a job and accommodation; this is a problem for many Somalis in MK. He has lived in temporary accommodation for two years.
As a community worker with the Somali Community, he is aware of many problems for Somalis in MK, but says that he is quite happy here; he would like to marry and settle down, but would want his children to keep their culture and customs. He contrasts Somalia, a third-world country, and England, a well-established country. MK is his second home; but he wants to go back to Somalia next year for a holiday, to see whether life has improved.
