Interview with Frank Atter.
Frank Atter discusses his role as Chairman of the Housing and Planning Committee of the Wolverton Urban District Council and the issues they faced before MK was planned, such as the clearance of unfit housing in Wolverton and New Bradwell. As Chairman of Wolverton Urban District Council in 1963, and a member of the County Planning Committee in 1963-64, he recalls wider plans related to London overspill housing at that time, like Pooleyville. He recalls Sir Frank Markham, MP assisting with getting industry into Wolverton, and the arrival of Copperad.
When Milton Keynes plans were announced, WUDC decided it was better to be included. In Wolverton now he comments that there is a problem of some loss of trade; but he feels that Wolverton community spirit has not been lost. Frank became the first representative of Wolverton on the Milton Keynes Development Corporation Board in 1975. He respected Jock Campbell, as Chairman of MKDC Board, and as an excellent public speaker and promoter of MK. He mentions topics discussed by MKDC: the proposal for an airport at Cublington, Wolverton Sports Pavilion (which he considers was unsuitable), housing, and the shopping centre. He considers that he lives in Wolverton, but looks upon Wolverton as being part of MK. In his opinion, people started to say they lived in MK when the shopping centre opened, and there were places to go.
