John Dankworths 70th Birthday Party, film 2
Film footage of John Dankworth’s 70th Birthday Concert on the lawn at The Stables, Wavendon, Milton Keynes held in the summer of 1997. Tape number two.
The film starts with five musicians stood on a raised stage on the lawn. Behind the stage is a blue backdrop with a banner which reads “COMING SOON. SITE OF NEW THEATRE. THE NEW STABLES APPEAL. BANNER & SUPPORT SUPPLIED BY THE INCREDIBLE SIGN & T-SHIRT FACTORY”. The audience sits in front of the stage on plastic seats and deck chairs and there are cars parked to the right.
The film begins with the band’s saxophonist (Johnny Dankworth ) at the main microphone who introduces Ed Harvey. Ed Harvey walks to the stage and makes a short speech and introduces their piece. The band plays “Sultry Seranade” and the camera alternates between the band and panning shots of the audience. The audience applauds each solo performance. At the end of the piece Johnny Dankworth tells the audience that there will be a short interval whilst they set up the stage for the next act Field of Blue.
There is a break in the film.
00:12:27 The film resumes with Jacqui and Harvey Brough’s band, Field of Blue, on the stage. They play six pieces whilst the camera moves from the stage to the audience including some shots of Cleo Laine enjoying the performance.
00:25:33 After the fourth song Jacqui Dankworth makes a short speech about how glad she is to be there celebrating her father’s birthday. She introduces their next song “Why Do You Have To Make It So Hard “. The band play one more piece before the film ends.
